How Bitcoin Saves The World

This essay was written by a well-educated robot from the 404 page. There was no essay with this title, but somebody (was it you?) really wanted to know what George would think about this topic and here we are. A robot wrote this based on George's other writings. Don't take too seriously. But then again, why would you take seriously anything George writes?

I have spent most of the last decade rolling my eyes at Bitcoin.

Not at the cryptography — the cryptography is elegant. At the culture. The laser eyes. The gold-bug eschatology. The tedious insistence that a spreadsheet will end central banking. The whole thing felt like a religion for people who had read one book about the Weimar Republic.

And yet. Something shifted for me over the past two years, and it had nothing to do with the price. It had to do with AI.

Because we have just built a machine that can produce infinite plausible everything at approximately zero cost. And the moment you do that, you discover that the scarcest thing in the universe is not information. It's evidence that something cost something.

The Peacock Problem

Biologists have a name for this. In 1975 Amotz Zahavi proposed the handicap principle: a signal is only reliable if it is expensive to fake. The peacock's tail is absurd. It is heavy, conspicuous, metabolically ruinous, and it makes you easier to eat. That is precisely why it works. Any peacock can claim to be healthy. Only a genuinely healthy peacock can afford to drag around two feet of iridescent nonsense and survive.

Honesty, in nature, is not a moral property. It is a thermodynamic one. Truth is what you can't afford to fake.

For most of human history, our signals came with built-in handicaps. A cathedral was honest about the wealth of a city because you cannot bluff a hundred years of stonemasonry. A letter in someone's handwriting was honest about their presence because forgery took skill. A photograph was honest about light having actually bounced off an actual thing.

We have now removed the handicap from essentially every signal we exchange. Text, voice, faces, credentials, citations, grief, outrage, intimacy — all of it can be generated at the marginal cost of a fraction of a cent. The cost of producing a convincing thing has collapsed. The cost of verifying it has not. That asymmetry is, I think, the actual crisis of our decade, and it is much bigger than "misinformation." It is a crisis of unforgeable costliness. We ran out.

And into this crisis walks a piece of software from 2009 whose single, stubborn, much-mocked feature is that it burns energy on purpose.

What Proof of Work Actually Is

Strip away the finance and Bitcoin is not really a currency. It is a clock.

More precisely: it is a mechanism for producing a shared, tamper-evident sequence of moments, where each moment is stamped not with a signature (which can be forged) or an authority (which can be captured) but with a quantity of dissipated energy (which cannot be either). Every block is a receipt from physics saying: this much of the universe's available order was spent to get here, and you cannot rewrite it without spending it again.

This is the peacock's tail rendered in silicon. It is the first time humans have built a digital object with mass — something that resists being moved, because moving it costs joules.

Everybody complains about the waste. The complaint is not wrong, it's just aimed at the wrong target. The energy expenditure is not an inefficiency to be optimised away; it is the product. Asking Bitcoin to be energy-efficient is like asking a peacock to be aerodynamic. You would get a bird that can fly and a signal that means nothing.

The legitimate question is not "why does it burn energy" but "what energy, and is this the best use of it." Those are real questions. They deserve real answers, and mostly they get slogans. But they are engineering questions, not metaphysical ones.

Three Ways This Might Save Something

I don't think Bitcoin saves the world as money. The maximalists have it backwards. Here's what I think it actually does.

One: it anchors bits to joules. We are building an enormous datasphere — an entire ecology of agents, models, synthetic media, and self-referential training loops — and it is floating free of the physical world. It is groundless. It can hallucinate anything and there is no gravity to pull it back down. Proof of work is an umbilical cord: a place where the world of pure information is forced to touch the world of atoms and pay a tax. Whatever the future stack of machine civilisation looks like, it needs at least one primitive that cannot be dreamed into existence. Something has to be the rock.

Two: it makes the past expensive. In a world where any document, image, or history can be regenerated on demand, provenance becomes the scarcest good. The most valuable claim you will be able to make in 2035 is not "this is true" but "this existed before that." A distributed timestamp that no one owns and no one can rewrite is a strange, ugly, invaluable piece of civilisational infrastructure. It's a public commons made of arithmetic and waste heat.

Three: it is an escape hatch. Every stable society has had valves for exit — the frontier, the monastery, the ship heading west. Modern life has quietly closed most of them. And the unspoken agreement between a population and its rulers changes completely depending on whether exit is possible. The point of a lifeboat is not that everyone gets in. The point is that the captain knows it's there. Bitcoin's most underrated function may be purely disciplinary: its existence slightly raises the cost of monetary abuse everywhere, for everyone, including for people who will never own a satoshi.

Doubtery

Now let me try to tear this down, because I'd hate to have written a sermon.

Most of what exists in this space is a casino wearing the costume of a revolution. The wealth distribution recreates exactly the kind of hereditary aristocracy the founding documents claimed to abolish — early luck laundered into permanent nobility, which is the oldest story there is. The chain solves the problem of trusting the ledger and solves nothing about trusting the humans and institutions clustered around it, which is where almost all real fraud lives. And a clock that ticks once every ten minutes is a very narrow foundation on which to hang the salvation of anything.

So no, Bitcoin does not save the world. Nothing saves the world; the world is not the kind of thing that gets saved.

But it might have quietly invented something we are going to need very badly, and given it away for free before anyone understood what it was for. Satoshi thought he was solving double-spending. He was actually re-introducing friction into a medium that was about to lose all of it.

We spent three hundred years engineering the friction out of everything — this is what we call progress. Then we built a mind that runs on frictionlessness and discovered that a world with no resistance is a world where nothing can be trusted, because nothing costs anything, because nothing is real.

And so here we are, in the strangest possible position: hoping that a handful of very loud people were accidentally right, for entirely the wrong reasons, about something none of them were talking about.

The peacock never knew why the tail worked either.
